About Bruce Bowers
Bruce Bowers is an internationally published photographer located in the Metro Washington DC area. He holds an M.F.A. in Sculpture, a B.F.A. in Painting, and a Certificate of Mastery in Photography from the New York Institute of Photography. His work appears in many private, corporate, cultural, and educational collections. He has had several gallery affiliations and his work has been widely shown both nationally and Internationally. Currently, Mr. Bowers has focused his interest on an exploration of human nude images. Continually on the lookout for poetry in everyday life, many of his images are unposed and capture women in the process of dressing, applying makeup, choosing clothing for the day, or any number of the activities of daily living. Conversely, some of his photos are posed and combined with analog influences in order to create a style that is contemporary while still giving a nod to the medium's rich history. and to the timeless quality of his subject matter. One of his inspirations, particularly for his more unposed images, is the work of New York City photographer, Saul Leiter, whose book, 'In My Room', captures glimpses into the private lives of a number of his women friends and wives from the mid 1940's through the 1980's. He is very interested in the issue of the 'seer' and the 'seen' in the photographer/model relationship and how it plays into the way we define our roles while in the company of others.
